Assistant Controller

ABOUT THE JOB

This is a full-time role requiring presence in the South San Francisco, CA office at least 1-2 days per week, with the flexibility to work from home part-time. The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the daily operations of the accounting department and oversees the month-end close process, tax matters, and a team of accounting consultants responsible for various accounting functions. The ideal candidate is a strong people leader with a collaborative mindset and deep technical accounting expertise. This individual thrives in a fast-paced environment and partners cross-functionally to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting and Close Process

  • Assist in managing the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP
  • Prepare and review R&D and clinical trial accruals, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements
  • Oversee and manage intercompany transactions and reconciliations
  • Analyze financial results and provide variance explanations to management

General Accounting Oversight

  • Supervise accounts payable, procurement, payroll, and general ledger functions
  • Review account reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of discrepancies
  • Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and documentation

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Support the design, implementation, and monitoring of internal controls
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, tax regulations, and reporting requirements
  • Coordinate with tax providers for accurate tax accounting, quarterly and annual tax projections, and filings
  • Assist with external audits, including the preparation of audit schedules

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting standards
  • Experience with clinical and R&D accruals and full financial statement preparation
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to and collaborating with all organizational levels
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting (required)
  • Active CPA license (required)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ total experience, including:
    • At least 4 years in a public accounting firm (preferably Big 4)
    • At least 1 year of management experience
  • Prior experience in the biotech industry is preferred

We anticipate the base salary for the Assistant Controller position in our South San Francisco, CA office to range from $154,000 to $193,000 annually and will depend on current market data and the candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education, experience, and geographic location. This position is also eligible for bonus, benefits, and participation in Star's equity plan. The compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described based on several factors.
