Job Description

Summary:
 
The Director, Accounting will be responsible for the ownership and execution over certain elements of our accounting, reporting and shared services processes through the impending years of growth and scaling of the organization.  Our accounting, reporting and shared services processes are critical to our business and require substantial focus and demonstrated expertise. The ideal candidate is one who has a strong partnership and collaboration mindset, brings demonstrated technical expertise and is driven to help the organization solve problems and enable growth in a variety of areas, sometimes without similar precedents. The candidate must have experience in various elements of the accounting operations processes of a publicly traded, global organization with a high volume of transactions and complexity.  The position will report to the Vice President, Controller and initially manage a team of three with additional resources as needed to support the controllership function and the growth of the Company.

Essential Functions

    • Owns the accounting close processes including the review, oversight and sign-off of monthly journal entries and account reconciliations for specific functional areas under management.  These may include, but are not limited to, oversight over the accounting areas in cash, prepaids, fixed assets, other assets, A/P, accruals, payroll, lease accounting, P/L and related analytics, equity, stock-based compensation accounting, and indirect tax or VAT.
    • Provide technical accounting leadership over critical areas, displaying good judgment as to the appropriate accounting alternatives for a growing company.
    • Identify, provide input to and/or support improvements to systems and processes to drive efficiency and enhance effectiveness of processes and the internal control environment.
    • Partner closely with internal stakeholders in planning and preparation of periodic financial reporting and analysis exercises that require insight into the financial statements.
    • Orchestrate and schedule processes and templates, provide training and guidance for direct reports, key stakeholders and consolidate results for distribution to executive management and routine public filings.
    • Work with management and independent auditors to ensure compliance with related control, audit and reporting requirements.
    • Work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation, scenario analysis and strategic decision making, sometimes without similar precedents.
    • Exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
    • Act independently to determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments.
    • Coach, mentor and develop a high-performing team.

Requirements

    • Minimum of 10+ years of related experience and a B.A. degree in Accounting or Finance.  CPA is preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls/SOX and financial reporting requirements in a public company setting is required.
    • In-depth knowledge of and experience in the Life Sciences industry, rules and requirements, Business Intelligence, Planning and ERP systems (i.e. NetSuite) is preferred.
    • Demonstrated partnership and collaboration with various internal departments including HR, Legal, FP&A, IT, R&D groups and external stakeholders including 3rd party Big 4 firms, accounting, tax and SOX advisory firms, valuation teams, other suppliers, specialists and strategic partners, is required.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Effectively delegates to and empowers team members yet is detail-oriented and ‘hands on’ when required.
    • Must be accurate, detailed and committed to high quality standards and proactive in finding solutions to achieve successful outcomes that are a win-win for the Company and key internal and external stakeholders.
    • Highly capable of following organizational plans, goal setting, resource management, contingency planning, coordinating and collaborating with others.

Compensation:
The compensation package will be competitive and includes comprehensive benefits and an equity component.
 
Salary Range: $214,000 - $226,000
